Winning this award is a great opportunity to showcase the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in promoting the mission of the San Jose Dance Theatre – from our ballet students and parents to our professional ballet teachers.
We started the year with a grand jeté and many other great accomplishments. That is right, you heard correctly. A grand jeté is a fancy French ballet term for a big leap or a long horizontal jump, starting from one leg and landing on the other. That is exactly what we did after an incredibly successful 2017 ballet season and Nutcracker performance.
We saw record numbers at our 52nd performance of The Nutcracker in San Jose, and enthusiasm for our show was very moving. The recently completed build-out of a fourth studio will ensure every dancer get the best ballet lessons in San Jose. Our dancers performed beautifully at the popular and fifth annual San Francisco Movement Arts Festival held at the Grace Cathedral. Graced in stunning brilliant red and canary yellow outfits, our dancers put on a professional performance, choreographed by artistic director of San Jose Dance Theatre’s The Nutcracker, Linda Hurkmans. Fitting of such a display of talent and skill, our school and dancers made headlines in the San Francisco Chronicle. Lastly, The Kirov Academy of Washington D.C., held their Summer Intensive Auditions in the Bay Area at our dance studio. This is a honor and privilege, but even more so the selection of a number of our ballet students who will attend The Kirov over the Summer.
We would certainly not be here without your support and commitment to develop, foster, and promote the art of dance for the youth in Silicon Valley.
We are choreographing other very exciting ideas that will benefit SJDT and our talented students this year and look forward to sharing those with you in the coming weeks.
