The 2021 – 2022 season begins early with an exciting new production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. This Shakespeare classic will be brought to life on the stage not only in San Jose, but for the first time, the SJDT company will tour this production. “We want to reach more communities around the Bay Area and beyond going into the future and this is our first small steps into a much larger touring program for the future,” Hurkmans says.

Our 56th production of The Nutcracker, will continue to delight audiences with the addition of the professional company, lifting the production to new heights. Accompanied by the Cambrian Symphony for the seventh year, conducted by Scott Krijien, this year’s production will again bring Christmas cheer to San Jose. SJDT is the Resident Ballet Company of the 2600-seat Center for the Performing Arts in downtown San Jose.

San Jose Dance Theatre will then launch its second annual Innovations program, delivering world class contemporary dance to San Jose. Inviting leading contemporary choreographers to develop new and exciting works for the company, you will not want to miss this innovative production. Choreographers include local emerging creators.

Back by popular demand, the company will continue to deliver digital programming for the coming season with its second Dance Shorts series. Engaging emerging choreographers of all styles, this digital program supports the growth of the choreographic community in San Jose. Subscribers will be treated to this and so much more content in the next season, including tutorials, behind the scenes, and all of our main stage productions.

Our spring production will take you on a fairy tale journey with Sleeping Beauty. After the success of our streamed version of this classic ballet, we are excited to present this magical show to live audiences. With one prick of her finger, she will sleep for 100 years and awake to true love’s first kiss. San Jose Dance Theatre brings the story of Sleeping Beauty to life at the Hammer Theatre Center.

San Jose Dance Theatre has grown significantly over the past year and has been a vibrant participant, contributor, and supporter of the arts industry through the COVID crisis. We will also continue its focus on bringing ballet to the community over the next year both live and digitally.

SJDT will build on its extensive community participation and workshop programs to young dancers and provide performance opportunities. We invite dancers to audition for roles in both The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty in the coming year.

With the continued growth of the organization, new partnerships, larger community engagement, extensive outreach and a commitment to building on classical and contemporary art in 2021/2022, San Jose Dance Theatre is set to launch into another exciting year.
