Youth American Grand Prix

San Jose Dance Theatre provides private coaching of Level 4 , 5 and 6 students towards the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) competition in San Francisco each year. Artistic Director, Linda Hurkmans is the Coordinator of the YAGP Program at SJDT and helps select students for this training. Former Principal Dancer with Miami City Ballet and esteemed San Jose Dance Theatre faculty member, David Fonnegra, provides 6 months of weekly private coaching in a solo classical ballet variation and a Contemporary piece preparing them for the San Francisco YAGP in February each year. Those students who make it to the YAGP Finals, will travel to New York City to compete in the finals.

YAGP training is not required of SJDT students, nor is it necessary for students to be successful at SJDT or in their pursuit of professional ballet careers. However, participation in YAGP does bolster students’ resumes when seeking admission to prestigious ballet schools and ballet companies and also looks impressive for college applications.
