FAQ Guide
Whether you're brand new or returning, here’s a quick reference to help you understand how our academy works. For full details, please refer to the full Academy Handbook posted on our website.
We offer ballet training for dancers of all ages:
Pre-Ballet (Ages 3–6): An introduction to movement, musicality, and coordination.
Primary youth Ballet (Levels 1–3, Ages 6–11): Dancers begin formal ballet technique and participate in our winter and spring performances.
Intermediate Ballet (Levels 4–5, Ages 10–13): Training intensifies in preparation for pointe shoes or male partnering work in the advanced levels.
Advanced Ballet (Levels 6–7, Ages 13+): Pre-professional training focused on refined technique, artistry, and performance. Advanced dancers take on principal roles in productions and serve as role models within the academy. Eligible students may audition for SJDT’s Studio Company for additional performance opportunities.

Yes! We have a robust Adult Open Program for all experience levels. All instructors are current or former professional dancers. You can take a drop in class or buy a ten class multipass and save. Open Class Calendar
Full-time enrollment is expected for academy dancers (Level 1 and up).
Dancers are required to attend all scheduled classes for their level, including spring, fall, and summer intensive.
Advanced dancers are encouraged to attend outside summer intensives to support their continued growth. If planning to attend a program elsewhere, please consult with the Artistic Director to select an option that aligns with your goals and complements your training at SJDT.
Missed a class? Makeup classes can be arranged in a lower level. Contact the front desk to schedule.

Consistent attendance helps prevent injury and supports progress.
Performance is a key part of our training. All dancers in Level 1+ are encouraged to participate in Nutcracker and Spring Showcaseproductions. These are professional-level opportunities that enrich artistic growth.
Dancers are evaluated continually by instructors and the Artistic Director. Evaluations cover attendance, focus, technique, & artistry. Advancement to the next level requires consistent participation and demonstrated growth. Dancers must show both physical preparedness(strength, flexibility, injury prevention) and mental readiness (maturity, focus, and ability to handle more challenging material) before being promoted.
Dancers often remain in a level for more than one year as they strengthen their skills.
Yes! We accept new students year-round. Performance participation will depend on proximity to show dates.
Full-time enrollment is required for academy levels.
Exceptions may be made in special cases with permission from the Artistic Director.
Teen or adult drop-in classes are available at a per-class rate.
Pay annually, by semester, or monthly via installment plan.
Tuition is prorated from the dancer’s start date. Prorated tuition does not extend to absences or early withdrawal from the program. Please see the handbook.
Performance fees are separate and will be announced with each production.
Arrive on time and in the correct uniform with hair done and proper shoes.
Notify the front desk if running late. Be sure to pick up your dancer on time.
Wear a cover-up when entering or exiting the building.
Be respectful to teachers, staff, and peers—we are a community.
