A Professional Ballet Company for San Jose

San Jose Dance Theatre (SJDT), its Board of Directors and Artistic Director, Linda Hurkmans, are excited to announce the establishment of a new ballet company for San Jose and the San Francisco Bay Area. San Jose Dance Theatre company will be another major arts organization for the growing city and continue to enrich the community’s artistic diversity.

The city has been without a professional ballet company for a number of years and there has been a growing need for true leadership in the dance industry. The SJDT team believe that to sustain a strong arts sector, a new company is needed.

The team at SJDT sees this as the perfect time to launch into this exciting new project. In these uncertain times for the entire arts sector, SJDT will use all of its resources to support professional dancers, choreographers and the wider industry. Artistic Director Linda Hurkmans believes the organization’s strong team is well positioned to drive a leading professional company.

The new company will be comprised of six professional dancers and six trainees. These artists will work with internationally renowned and local choreographers across the year to build a leading new company for the San Francisco Bay Area. Auditions for professional and trainee dancers will be held at SJDT studios on July 19th and all applicants should apply online by submitting their resume and a video. Visit sjdt.org or email [email protected] for more details.

SJDT wants to set itself apart by being a true community representative of the dance sector. It invites all dancers and creators to join together to drive this exciting new product. With a major focus on community development, the organization will support dance creation not yet seen in San Jose.
The company will perform in San Jose Dance Theatre’s 55th Nutcracker in 2020 and a yet to be announced season of works.

SJDT has lead the way with a now established school over the last six years. To support this exciting new project, the organization will also be launching its pre-professional program. Designed for high school graduates, this program will welcome emerging dancers to train alongside company members. They will hone their skills over the one year program to launch their careers in dance. This program will audition throughout SJDT’s Summer program.

“We have worked very hard to get to this point. We can see so much potential for a leading company in San Jose and I can’t wait to work with all the dancers and creators that we have planned in the coming years,” says Hurkmans.
